He did not eat all of those eels.

haya:ł

She may eat them if she is hungry," he thought.

haya:ł
And
dahch'inehsday
he fished.
haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought.

Yiimantuuwingyai fished for eels thinking, "Hereafter the priest will do this way; he will say of me, 'He did that way.'"

'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,

Tomorrow I will go fishing.

And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,

Everybody will fish tomorrow."

haya:ł
And
dahch'inehsday
he fished.
haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
hayi-q'
"This way
'a:whił-ch'ide:n'-te:
he will say of me."

Yiimantuuwingyai fished and thought to himself, "He will say of me this way he did."

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
hayi-q'
"This way
'a:na:'idyaw
he did."
haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'

And
'a:ch'ondehsne'

Then having gone back he soon came along the shore again from the south until he came to the mouth of the Klamath. There again he said to the TimatciLtcwe, "You will go to sleep, and while you sleep they will go past."

"He (the coming priest) will do that, and then he will eat them," thought Yiimantuuwingyai.

For that reason

That is why he always carries the medicine.

he thought.

"I will go back," he thought.

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,

"What

am I going to do?"

"What am I going to do?

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,

"For him
na:sehłchwin'-te:
I will make it."
haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,

"This way
ch'iwiyung'ił-te:
he will eat.

I will do this for him. This way he will eat them.

He always has it
de:-q'

when he stands
ch'iwingyun'-de'
if he eats
xwa:-wehsle'-te:
he will get enough.

If he eats, having the medicine in his hands as I have it, he will get enough.

He will put in the fire;

if he gets enough,
do:-xoling na[']ta'awh
he won't carry

He will not carry to the house what is left after he gets enough.

de:-q'
This way
'a:na:ch'ilah-te:
he will do.
hayi-q'
This way
ch'iwingyun'-te:
he will eat."

This is the way he shall do; this is the way he shall eat.

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
minłun-ding
"Ten

dahna:ne:se:da:-te:
I will fish.

Ten days I will fish," thought Yiimantuuwingyai.

hayi-q'
This way
ch'iwiyun'ił-te:
he will eat."

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
de:-q'
"This way
'a:na:ch'ilah-te:
he will do.

"This way he will do," he thought.

whe:
Me
'a:whił-ch'ide:n'-te:
he will say of
hayi-q'
'This way

"He will say of me, 'He did this way.'

whe:
I
na:te:sdiya:-te:

I will go back.

q'ut
Already

I have made it

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
q'ut
"Already

I have finished,"
ch'ondehsne'
he thought.

Already I have finished.

q'ut
'ah'ting-q'i-'unt'e:

"every kind

All kinds of people will eat the eels.

Nevertheless

I will watch the eels.

They won't dodge away from the net.

My eels won't dodge away from the net.

niwinwhong'
Good it is

All is good.

hayi-q'
This way

it will be.
hayi-heh
Nevertheless

He
'a:whił-ch'ide:n'-te:

It will be this way, nevertheless I will watch my eels; he will say of me, 'He did this way.'

hay

They will be good.

q'ut
Already
niwingwhong'
it is good.

Already they are good.

whe:
I

hayi-q'
That way
ch'iwinyun'-te:
he will eat.

He (the priest) will eat this way.

q'ut
'aht'ing
All
yiwingyun'-te:

Everybody will eat them.

I have finished.

They won't dodge.

They won't dodge.

hayi-q'
This way
'a:winehł-te:
it will be.

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
q'ut
de:t
"Now
na:te:sdiya:-te:
I will go back
yima:n-yinuq
across south."

Now I will go back across to the south."

haya:ł
And
yima:n-yinuq
across south
na:'ndiyay
he got back.
haya:ł
And
na[']tehsdiyay
he got back
yima:ni-yinahch'ing
across south
k'iye:
again.
haya:ł
And

When he got back the water in which the fish lived was all gone.

'aht'ing
All

ch'iswchwe'n
he made
hay

they used to live.

He made the banks of the ponds slide out.

haya:ł
And

he came back.

From the south

miq'eh-na:diwul-ding
To the mouth of the Klamath
na:'ndiyay
he got back.

Then he came back from the south along the shore of the ocean to the mouth of the Klamath.

do: no:'awh
He never put down
hay
that
k'ima:w
medicine
xok'iwinya'nya:n'

He never ceased having the medicine in his hand.

'a:ch'ondehsne'
He thought
hay
that
tima'-ch'iłchwe:
TimatciLtcwe,
nikiwingun-te:
"You will go to sleep
hay
that
me:q'
during
'aht'ing
all
ch'e:nileh-te:

"You will go to sleep," he thought of the TimatciLtcwe.

nikiwingun-te:
You will sleep
hay

me:q'
while.

"While you sleep, they will go by.

łah-xw gya'
I wish

I wish something would cause your mind to melt away.

hay
That

they will go."

They will go while that happens."

ch'itehsyay
He went along.
łe:na:lding
To Weitehpec
ch'iningyay
he came.

Yiimantuuwingyai went along to Weitchpec.

tima'-ch'iłchwe:
Of the TimatciLtcwe
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
nikiwingun-te:
"You will go to sleep
hay

east
do:-xoling tindil
they will never go.

He thought concerning the TimatciLtcwe, "You will go to sleep. The eels will never go to the east.

ła'ay
One
ch'e:wehslin'-te:
for them will flow out.

Only one river and that mine, will flow out for them.

hayah-mił
And
hay-de:t
these

this way.

I will watch my eels."

haya:ł
And
ch'iningyay
he came
de:di
this
me:q'
in.

He came up to Hupa.

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
de:di
"This
me:q'
in
whe:
I
na:diwh'ing
watch
hay-de:t
these
whitłiwhxa:n
my eels.

"Here in this valley I will watch my eels," he thought.

hay
These
yiwingyun'-te:
she will eat
hay
the
k'iłchwe:
kiLtcwe.
yiwingyun'-te:
She will eat
hay
whitłiwhxa:n
my eels."

"KiLtcwe will eat them.

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
de:di
"This
me:q'
in
xowiłtsay-e:-te:
until it becomes shallow
na:dił-xw
they will continue to live.
łah-xw
Just

water
no[']nundiya:-te:
in one place they will stay,"
ch'ondehsne'
he thought.

Even if the river becomes shallow they will live in some deep places.

haya:ł
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
xa'a:winehł-te:
"It will be that way.

łah-xw
Just
ła:n
many
me'dil
boats
mił-ch'o:łtuq'-te:
he will count."

Many boats filled with eels shall be counted.

haya:ł
And
ch'itehsyay
he started.

ch'iningyay
He came
de:di
this
me:q'
in.

q'ut
'aht'ing
All
yiwingyun'-te:
ate them.

Every one ate them.

hayah-mił
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
q'ut
"Already
'aht'ing
all
yiwingyung'

hay
whitohnay[']
my fish.

Every one has eaten my fish.

whe:
I
q'ut
already
hay

I have done
whe:
I
hay
that
'a:na:whlah-te:
I was intending to do."

Already I have done that which I was intending to do."

hayah-mił
And
dahch'inehsday
he fished.

He fished.

q'ut
"Now
me:niłxe'-tehł
I am finishing,"
ch'ondehsne'
he thought.
hayah-mił
And
dahch'inehsday
he fished.

"Now I am fishing," he thought.

hayah-mił
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
de:-q'
"This way
chwola'-ding
five
yiwiłxa:l
mornings
mił
after."

"He shall do this way for five mornings."

haya:ł
And
k'e:na[']wił'na'
he cooked it
xok'iwinya'nya:n'
his hand
me'
in
sa'a:n
lying
hay
that
k'ima:w
medicine.

He cooked it with the medicine lying in his hand.

hayah-mił
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
de:-q'
"This way
a:wilehł-te:
it will be
hay-de:t
this."

"It shall be done this way," he thought.

haya:ł
And
ch'iwingya'n
he ate it.

He (Yiimantuuwingyai) ate the eels.

hayah-mił
And
'a:ch'ondehsne'
he thought,
de:-q'
"This way
whe:
of me
'a:whił-ch'ide:n'-te:
he will say,
xa'a:na:ch'ilaw
'That he did
xowh
I think.'
whe:
Me
'a:whił-ch'ide:n'-te:
he will talk about.

"He will say of me, 'He did this way.'

hayah-mił
And
de:-q'
this way
hayah
here
de:
ch'iwingyun'-te:
he will eat.

He will eat them here as I have done.

haya:ł
And
xwa:-wehsle'-te:
he will get enough.
hayah
There
hay
the
k'ima:w
medicine

When he has enough he will put the medicine in the fire.

hayah-mił
And
whe:
my
hay

hayah-mił
And
hay
that
wung[']xine:wh-te:
he will talk about.

hayah-mił
And
hayi-q'
this way
hayah
there
niwingwhong'
it is good
hay

k'ima:w
medicine.

This medicine is good.

hayah-mił
And
whe:
me
hayi-q'

He will say of me, 'He did this way.'

q'ut
Now
de:di
this place

in
q'ut
now
hayi-q'
this way
q'ut
me:nehłxe'
I finish.

"Now here in this place I finish.

hayi-q'
This way
a:wilehł-te:
it will be.

This is the way it shall be.

do:-łun-te:
Not many,

Not many shall say of me, 'He did that way.'

q'ut
Now
xa'unłun-te:
it will be that much.

'ah'ting-xw-'unt'e:
Every kind

Every kind of people will eat them.

hay
The

I like
hay

do not stop.

Even if bad people eat them I do not want that the eels shall stop coming.

'aht'ing
All

They will not stop.

hayi-q'
This way
wun[']xine:wh-te:
he will talk about
hay-de:
these

This is the way he will talk of the fish.

hayi-q'
This way
ch'iwiyung'ił-te:
he will eat

He will eat them in this manner with the medicine.

hayah-mił
And

na:sehłchwin'-te:
I will make it."

This way now I will make it for him."

q'ut
Now
'a[']de:ne'
he said,

"I am about to finish.
de:t
Now

Now I am going home across the ocean to the south."
