Bio

James Sarmento (Shasta) received his doctorate in Native American Studies from the University of California, Davis in 2021. Dr. Sarmento currently works as the Executive Director of Cultural Resources for the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians. He was the Executive Director of the Native American Language Center and Project Coordinator for the J.P. Harrington Database Project from 2008 to 2013, where he assisted both academic and indigenous scholars in accessing John Peabody Harrington’s ethnographic and linguistic notes. He worked for the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation as their Cultural Resource Manager where he managed the Site Preservation Unit from 2013 until 2017. He later worked with the Buena Vista Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians as their Tribal Historic Preservation Office. His research focuses on California Indian Language Reclamation, specifically with the Shasta language, California archaeology and archaeological field methods as they pertain to Cultural Resource Management within California, and the digital archiving of linguistic and cultural data.
