Bio

Ayukîi koovura, nanithvuuy uum Jason Hockaday. Naa karuk’araar karu Athithufvunupma ni’aramsiprivtih.

Hello, my name is Jason Hockaday (he/him). I’m enrolled in the Karuk Tribe and Happy Camp is my family’s ancestral village. I’m a Ph.D. Candidate in Native American Studies at UC Davis and am helping rematriate my family’s ancestral Konomihu-Shasta music recordings, sung by our Grandma Ellen in 1926. Within this project, I am researching the gendered aspects of Grandma’s songs. I learned about California Two Spirit roles when I was an intern for the Karuk Tribe’s language department in summer 2016, and I hope for my research to build on that work and support Two Spirit and LGBTQ California Indian wellbeing through language and music. I am happy to be a Graduate Student Researcher for the NALC where I am contributing to various projects such as: coordination for the Knowledge Carriers program, indexing Shasta language recordings and other materials for easier archival retrieval, and organizing next summer’s language reclamation workshops. Yôotva!
