Sustainable Futures for California’s Indigenous Languages: Resource Development, Training, and Visibility
Sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
This project will support activities conducive to the Language Center’s mission, which is to foster meaningful connections between university-based linguistic scholarship and the needs of community-based language initiatives. Activities will include several interrelated areas: training and support for tribal and nonprofit partners’ language programs; developing digital tools to improve access to dictionaries and archival resources; creating pedagogical materials that can be adapted to a variety of languages; and increasing awareness of Native American languages and histories through programming and course offerings.
This Fall, 2022, the Center will be hosting Native Knowledge Carriers who will spend time on campus interacting with students and faculty. The Knowledge Carriers program includes supporting Knowledge Carriers in visiting NAS classes as a guest speaker, meeting with students and faculty one-on-one or in small groups, facilitating workshops to share skillsets, and sharing meals.
